“How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” – Matthew 12:34
Something about this verse got to me. And I started digging and meditating.
The context is that Jesus healed a demon-possessed, blind and mute man v22. (Wow!)
While the people wondered whether Jesus could possibly be the Son of David, the Pharisees claimed that He did this by Beelzebub, the ruler of demons (!) v24
For or Against?
Jesus responds with this logic:
If you are not FOR me, you are against Me. (v30)
If you are against Me, you are evil.
(A sidetrack to this… Isn’t it interesting that we call criminals for ‘evil’, while Jesus calls them ‘lost,’ like sheep without a shepherd. He calls those who are against Him for ‘evil.’)
If you are evil, the treasure of your heart is evil.
If the treasure of your heart is evil, you produce evil.
Just like how a good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit.
And a bad tree cannot bring forth good fruit.
This is such practical life wisdom. Don’t buy into the “sweet words and promises” of people who come against Jesus. When the root is evil, the intentions and fruit will be evil.
Treasure – Good or Bad?
“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.” – Matthew 12:35
Quite interesting that a treasure is not a neutral thing. A treasure can be good or evil.
What you value is your treasure.
When you value Jesus, He is your good Treasure.
When you consciously don’t value Jesus, the Evil one is your evil treasure.
The Good Treasure is full of good things. Like healing, like driving out demons, like making the blind see.
The Evil treasure is full of evil things. Like sowing strife, like coming against Jesus.
Also notice that a person is called good when his treasure is good (Jesus).
A person is called evil when his treasure is evil (the evil one).
Jesus is revealing Himself as the Christ to them.
He is revealing that the good He is doing – the healings etc – is because He is good. And only God is good! He is revealing to them that He is the One greater than Jonah, the One greater than Solomon. (v41, 42) He is the real deal. He is the One!
But they don’t get it.
May we always receive His goodness towards us. His life, His love, His healing, His direction. May we always have a good opinion of Him.
He is the good Treasure in our hearts. Our beautiful Gem. Every which way we turn Him, He is lovely to behold.
Only because of Jesus can we produce good fruit.
May we be wise to see things the way He see’s them. May we discern good and evil the way He does.
