My notes from “A Better Way to Pray”, by Andrew Wommack

Continuation from: What Prayer is Not:

9. God does not answer your prayer according to your effort

People think that God answers their prayer according to their effort.

Trying to manipulate God to answer prayers. I’ve done this, and that, why didnt God answer my prayer?
You just told me why: You’re just focusing on what you do for God, not what God did for you.

If you get up early in the morning to pray and read Bible to disipline yourself, doing it for you, then that is good. But if you do it for God, to feel all smug about yourself, then that is not good.

“So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”” Luke 11:2-4 NKJV

It is commonly taught that God is like this friend:

“And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’? I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.” – Luke 11:5-8 NKJV

This is taught: First time God might say no, then you just continue to ask until you make God give you what you need. Bombard the gates of heaven. Get other people to pray together with you. When all these thousands of people pray, then we bombard heaven to make Him give us what we want.

What if we had friends like that? If friends treat you better than this, why do you think you have to beg and beg God? You have more faith in people treating you well, than you have faith for how God treats you!?

You are not going to GET God to do anything. Faith does not move God. God has already done everything! He made the supply before you had the need. He doesn’t need to go out to provide for any need.

God wants revival, healing etc more than you do.

When we think that we are the ones getting God to do things, it is the same as saying that God is responsible for all the dead churches etc. This is wrong!

God is trying to bless countries etc! God is not out to jugde anyone or any nation. God has already judged Jesus!

The tragedies happening are about us being self-destructive. We have to repent (change our minds).

10. Prayer is not about us mediating between God and man.

Jesus made a HUGE difference!

1. Genesis 18 – Abraham as mediator.
Between 2 parties, trying to reconsile between God and Sodom and Gomorra.
Abraham to God: Turn from your fierce anger.

In the OT God was angry with sin, because Jesus hadn’t died for our sins.

God is such a God of love. He loved Abraham and made a covenant with him, and honored him, not because he was perfect or deserved it. He had made some serious mistakes! But God had given him His word. «If you stand there, you can stop me from doing this.»

Amazing!

Abraham pleading for the righteous, down to 10 people.
God destroyed the city.
God supernaturally responded to intercerssion.

But this is how prayer is being taught. Like this unloving «friend». Beg and plead until He pours out. This is so offensive to God!

2. Exodus 32 – Moses as mediator.
v 10. God’s wrath. Leave me alone, Moses! Moses you can keep me from executing my wrath by pleading for mercy!
v 11 «Repent of Your evil!», Moses said
v 14. The Lord repented!

Numb 16 – the people were challenging Moses’ authority.
The earth swallowed the people.
People got mad at Moses for it.
The glory of God appeared in the cloud in the tabernacle. God was angry! Wanted Moses to get out of his way.
Moses told Aaron to get coal and put in censer. (Repr. prayer)

Between the living and the dead. The plague was stopped by the coal in the censer. This is taught as prayer today. This is absolutely wrong!

Gal 3 – The law was given by angels and ordained by the mediator. Moses called a mediator!

3. JESUS is our Mediator

“For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,” – 1 Timothy 2:5-6 NKJV

Jesus atoned for our sins. Sin is no longer a problem with God. God is not angry.

Abraham interceded, dont you think that Jesus is better than Abraham?
It was appropriate for Moses to pray the way he did, because Jesus had not yet borne our judgment.

Jesus in now the ONLY mediator between man and God. There is no other mediator!

If you think that you are a mediator, you are antichrist; Adding to what Jesus has done.

Jesus + anything = nothing
Jesus + nothing = anything

11. Prayer is not about turning God from his wrath.

God is happy and blessed, not angry with people.
God has made the provision for everyone, but people need to believe to receive.
We still need to preach and teach.

The sin that sends you to hell is the ONE sin: not receiving Jesus.
A person who doesn’t receive Jesus will be held accountable for their sins.

Jesus has paid for our sins.

God loves you, you dont have to beg and plead!

Right after the parable mentioned above, this follows:

“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Luke 11:9-13 NKJV

The parable of a widow, nagging the unjust judge:

“Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, ‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’ ” Luke 18:1-5 NKJV

People think this is the way God is.
But Jesus is making a contrast again:

“Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” Luke 18:6-8 NKJV

v 6. God will bear long with you… God will avenge His elect. We dont have to beg God over and over.

It is not about His ability to give, but our ability to receive.

12. Prayer is not making God turn, approaching Him as if He doesn’t want to give.

We think that it is God who let the babies die, etc.
We think that as christians we should stand in between, so that God will not judge our nation.

If this is the attitude in prayer, then you are approaching God in unbelief, slandering Him, and not esteeming Christ. It is thinking that what Jesus did is not enough, and we are trying to take the place of Christ. Then you wonder why God isn’t anwering your prayers?

But it is because Jesus did such an amazing job that God doesn’t get ticked off for the way you approach Him. You think you have more compassion for people than what God has?

Once, while in prayer, I yelled: «Lord, if you love the people here half as much as I do, there would be revival!» That’s when I realised that something was really wrong.

We think we are the ones making God turn. That is so wrong.
God loves people infinately more than we do!

If you have compassion for people to get healed, He has touched your heart, so that you can do something about it and release the power of God – not so that you can beg Him to become just as merciful as you.

God moves in the nations through people. But instead of doing what God told us to do, we plead Him to do it. We have the same power on the inside that raised Jesus from the dead!
As we go out and do it, the signs will follow us!

Satan is behind much of the teaching about prayer being about trying to get God to be as merciful as they are. It’s keeping people in their prayer closet, instead being out there talking to somebody, commanding healing to come into their bodies.
